Banana Date Smoothie โ€” Creamy, Naturally Sweet & No Added Sugar

I made this the morning after a weekend that left our kitchen a mess and my energy at zero. Three ripe bananas in the freezer, two Medjool dates going soft in the drawer, and that was breakfast. This banana date smoothie gets all its sweetness from fruit: no syrup, no added sugar, no yogurt.

Thick, creamy, and naturally sweet โ€” ready before the coffee even finishes brewing.

Just frozen banana, dates, chia and a little cinnamon, blended until thick and creamy. If youโ€™d rather have the version with yogurt and milk, our everyday banana smoothie is the one we make on school mornings.

Why Youโ€™ll Love This Banana Date Smoothie

This one earns its spot in our weekly rotation for a simple reason: it tastes like a treat but it’s built entirely from whole foods. Here’s what makes it worth keeping on repeat.

  • No refined sugar, ever. Ripe banana and Medjool dates sweeten this smoothie naturally โ€” no syrup, no white sugar.
  • Ready in 5 minutes. One blender, five whole ingredients, zero prep beyond peeling a banana.
  • Naturally creamy, no dairy. Frozen banana and chia seeds thicken it up without needing yogurt or ice cream.
  • Real fiber and potassium. Chia seeds and banana keep you full and steady until lunch.
  • Kid-approved. My kids ask for the “cinnamon smoothie” and have no idea it’s this wholesome.

Ingredients & Notes

Five whole, honest ingredients โ€” no protein powder, no syrup, nothing you can’t pronounce. Here’s what each one does and how to swap it if needed.

Five simple, whole ingredients โ€” that’s really all it takes.

Frozen Banana

The riper the banana before you freeze it, the sweeter and creamier your smoothie will be โ€” trust the brown spots. A fresh banana with ice works too, though the texture will be a touch thinner. For a lighter, everyday version without the extras below, try our classic banana smoothie.

Medjool Dates

These are what make this smoothie taste indulgent without a drop of added sugar. Pit them first, and if they feel dry or stiff, soak them in warm water for 5 minutes so they blend smooth instead of leaving little bits.

Chia Seeds

A tablespoon adds fiber and a gentle thickness โ€” they basically disappear once blended but do a lot of quiet work for digestion and staying full.

Ground Cinnamon

Warm, cozy, and it makes the whole smoothie taste a little like banana bread in a glass.

Unsweetened Almond Milk

Any unsweetened plant milk works here โ€” oat milk makes it a touch thicker and nuttier, and it’s the easy swap if anyone in your house avoids nuts. Prefer something greener? This green banana smoothie version folds in spinach the same easy way.

Vanilla Extract & Ice

Vanilla rounds out the sweetness, and a few ice cubes are optional โ€” only use them if your banana wasn’t frozen.

How to Make a Banana Date Smoothie

This Banana Date Smoothie recipe comes together in three quick moves โ€” prep the dates, blend everything until creamy, and pour. Here’s exactly how.

Prep the Dates

  1. Pit the Medjool dates. If they feel dry or stiff, soak them in a little warm water for 5 minutes so they break down easily in the blender.

Blend Until Creamy

  1. Pour the almond milk into the blender first, then add the pitted dates, frozen banana slices, chia seeds, and ground cinnamon.

  1. Blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds, until the dates and chia seeds are fully broken down and the smoothie turns thick and creamy.

Serve & Enjoy

  1. Pour into a tall glass, dust with a little extra cinnamon, and drink it right away while it’s cold.

Lily’s Tips

A few things I’ve learned from making this more mornings than I can count.

  • Soak stubborn dates. If your Medjool dates aren’t soft and sticky, five minutes in warm water saves your blender the work.
  • Freeze your bananas ahead. I always keep a bag of ripe, spotted bananas in the freezer โ€” it means this smoothie is ready whenever we need it.
  • “The riper your bananas, the less sugar you’ll need โ€” nature does the sweetening for you.”
  • A medium banana provides about 10% of your daily potassium needs, which is part of why this one keeps us going all morning.
  • Don’t skip the chia seeds. They’re what gives this smoothie its thick, spoonable texture without any yogurt or ice cream.

Variations

This base recipe is easy to bend toward whatever your morning needs, without losing the clean, whole-food theme.

Nut-Free Version

Swap the almond milk for oat milk or hemp milk โ€” the texture gets even thicker and it stays completely nut-free.

Green Boost

Add a handful of spinach; you won’t taste it, but you’ll want to see how we do it in this green banana smoothie version.

Fully Vegan

This recipe already comes together without dairy or eggs, but for a version built specifically around plant-based protein, our fully vegan version is worth a look too.

Extra Protein

Stir in a scoop of your favorite protein powder if you want this to double as a post-workout drink โ€” or go straight for our protein-packed banana shake, which is built around exactly that.

How to Store

This one’s best fresh, but here’s how to keep leftovers or get ahead for busy mornings.

Counter: Not recommended โ€” this smoothie is best enjoyed fresh, within 5 minutes of blending, before the banana and chia start to separate.

Fridge: Up to 1 day in an airtight jar or bottle. Shake or stir well before drinking, since the chia seeds will thicken it further overnight.

Freezer: Up to 1 month, poured into a freezer-safe container with a little room at the top to expand. Thaw overnight in the fridge and blend again for 10 seconds to bring back the creamy texture.

Meal prep tip: I like portioning the dates, banana, and chia into freezer bags ahead of time so all I have to do in the morning is dump and blend โ€” the same way I get ahead on meal-prepping our banana overnight oats for busy weeks.

Signature Lily

This is the smoothie I reach for on mornings when I want something real and simple โ€” just ripe bananas, sweet dates, and five quiet minutes before the day gets loud.
