Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats — Rich, Creamy & Naturally Sweet

You know that moment when your bananas have gone a little too far? That’s exactly when I make these. One Tuesday morning before school drop-off, I mashed a ripe banana into a jar with cocoa powder and oats, left it in the fridge, and woke up to something that tasted like chocolate pudding for breakfast.

My kids didn’t even realize it was healthy. These chocolate banana overnight oats are everything — no cooking, no sugar added, ready in 5 minutes flat. If you love overnight oats as much as we do, our simple banana overnight oats are a great place to start too.

Why You’ll Love These Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats

These are the overnight oats I make on repeat — and once you try them, you’ll understand why. Here’s what makes them so good.

  • No cooking, ever. Five minutes of stirring the night before — that’s it. Morning-you will be so grateful.
  • Naturally sweet. The ripe banana does all the sweetening. No refined sugar, no syrup needed.
  • Tastes like dessert. Rich cocoa, creamy oats, a swirl of peanut butter on top — it genuinely feels indulgent.
  • Kid-approved. My three always ask for seconds. It’s become our Friday morning ritual.
  • 100% plant-based. Dairy-free, egg-free, and wholesome from the first spoonful to the last.

Ingredients & Notes

Six ingredients. All of them probably already in your kitchen. Here’s what each one does — and what to swap if you need to.

ingredients for chocolate banana overnight oats laid out on white marble — rolled oats, cocoa powder, ripe banana, chia seeds, and almond milk
Everything you need — rolled oats, ripe banana, cocoa powder, chia seeds, almond milk. Simple pantry staples, zero refined sugar.

Rolled oats. Use old-fashioned rolled oats — not instant. They hold their texture overnight and give you that thick, chewy consistency. Quick oats work in a pinch but the result will be softer.

Ripe banana (1 medium, mashed). The riper, the better. Brown-spotted bananas are what you want here — sweeter, softer, and they blend into the cocoa beautifully. “The riper your bananas, the less sugar you’ll need — nature does the sweetening for you.”

Unsweetened cocoa powder. Go for a good quality cocoa — it makes a real difference in depth of flavor. Raw cacao powder works too and adds extra antioxidants.

Chia seeds. These are the secret to the pudding-like texture. They absorb the almond milk overnight and transform everything into something thick and spoonable. Don’t skip them.

Almond milk. Any plant-based milk works — oat milk gives an even creamier result, coconut milk makes it more indulgent. For a dairy version, regular whole milk is fine too.

Pinch of salt. Never skip the salt in a chocolate recipe. It deepens the cocoa flavor in a way nothing else does.

Toppings — peanut butter + cacao nibs. The peanut butter on top melts slightly into the cold oats and creates little ribbons of richness. Cacao nibs add crunch and an extra hit of dark chocolate. Both are optional but both are worth it.

How to Make Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats

5 minutes of work tonight, a cozy chocolate breakfast tomorrow. That’s the whole deal — follow these steps and your jar will be ready and waiting.

mashed ripe banana mixed with cocoa powder forming a smooth dark chocolate paste in a white ceramic bowl — step 2 of chocolate banana overnight oats recipe
Mix the cocoa directly into the mashed banana first — this is the trick that prevents any dry lumps in your final jar.

1. Mash the banana. In a glass jar or bowl, mash the ripe banana with a fork until smooth. A few small lumps are fine — they’ll disappear overnight.

2. Add the cocoa and salt. Spoon the cocoa powder and pinch of salt directly onto the mashed banana. Mix together until you get a thick, smooth chocolate paste. Doing this before adding any liquid prevents the cocoa from clumping — this step matters.

stirring rolled oats and chia seeds into chocolate banana mixture in a glass jar before refrigerating overnight — easy vegan overnight oats recipe
Stir until every oat and chia seed is fully coated — no dry pockets at the bottom. Then seal and refrigerate for at least 8 hours.

3. Add the oats and chia seeds. Pour the rolled oats and chia seeds into the jar. Stir to combine with the chocolate banana paste.

4. Pour in the almond milk. Add the almond milk and stir well until everything is fully combined and the chia seeds are evenly distributed. Make sure no dry oats are sitting at the bottom.

5. Refrigerate overnight. Cover the jar tightly and place in the fridge for at least 8 hours, or overnight. The chia seeds will absorb the liquid and the whole mixture will thicken into a creamy, pudding-like texture.

6. Top and serve. In the morning, give the oats a good stir. Spoon a generous dollop of peanut butter on top, scatter some cacao nibs, and eat straight from the jar.

Lily’s Tips for Chocolate Overnight Oats

I’ve made this jar more times than I can count. These are the small things that take it from good to really, really good.

Use the ripest banana you can find. Brown-spotted is ideal. Did you know that brown-spotted bananas contain up to 80% more natural sugar than yellow ones? That’s why you don’t need a drop of added sugar in this recipe.

Mix cocoa into banana first — always. This is the trick that changes everything. Cocoa powder dissolved into mashed banana before you add any liquid means zero dry lumps, zero gritty texture. It creates a paste that coats every oat evenly.

Don’t rush the rest time. 8 hours minimum. The chia seeds need the full night to absorb the liquid properly. I’ve tried 4 hours — it’s good but not the same. Overnight is the move.

Taste before you seal the jar. If your banana wasn’t very ripe, add half a teaspoon of maple syrup or a couple of drops of vanilla extract. Adjust before the fridge, not after.

Prep multiple jars on Sunday. This is my Sunday-to-Friday ritual — I prep 3 jars on Sunday night and breakfast is done for the first half of the week.

Variations

This base recipe is endlessly adaptable. Whether you want more protein, more crunch, or a nut-free version for school days — here’s how to make it yours.

Add peanut butter inside, not just on top. Stir a tablespoon of peanut butter directly into the mixture before refrigerating for a deeper, nuttier chocolate flavor all the way through. For a full recipe built around this combo, our peanut butter banana overnight oats are exactly what you need.

Add chocolate chips. Stir in a small handful of dark chocolate chips before refrigerating — overnight oats banana chocolate chip style. They stay slightly firm and give you little pockets of melty chocolate in the morning. My kids go wild for this version.

Make it high-protein. Add a scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder with the dry ingredients. You may need to add a splash more almond milk to loosen the consistency.

Make it nut-free. Skip the peanut butter and top with sunflower seed butter instead. Just as creamy, completely nut-free — great for school lunchboxes.

How to Store Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats

One of the best things about this recipe is that it keeps beautifully. Make a batch on Sunday and you’ve got breakfast sorted for most of the week.

Counter: Not recommended — always refrigerate these oats once assembled.

Fridge: Up to 4 days in a sealed jar or airtight container. The texture actually improves by day 2 — thicker, creamier, more set. Add toppings fresh each morning. If the oats thicken too much overnight, stir in a splash of almond milk to loosen.

Freezer: Up to 1 month, without toppings. Leave 1 inch of space at the top, thaw overnight in the fridge and stir in a splash of almond milk. The texture is slightly softer than fresh.

Meal prep tip: Prep 3 to 4 jars every Sunday evening. Takes less than 15 minutes total, and breakfast is ready for most of the week. Keep the peanut butter and cacao nibs separate and add them fresh each morning for the best texture and crunch.
